In recent years, Streaming Video on Demand (SVOD) services are behaving more like networks by developing original programming. The Q2 2014 Centris National Tracking Study data show that Netflix has thus far achieved the most success, with "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black", but Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime are making inroads with their efforts at original programming.
Among subscribers to the three major SVOD services, Netflix boasts the highest proportion of original programming viewers according to the Q2 2014 Centris National Tracking Survey. Approximately 22 million Netflix subs have watched any Netflix original programming. Hulu Plus is firmly in second place, with Amazon Prime a distant third.
SVOD originals are not just for Millennials; across services a significant proportion of those aged 55+ have watched any original programming. Again Netflix leads, with more than half of subscribers in this age group watching any original programs.
The survey results reported above are based on Centris National Tracking Study data collected in Q2 2014, with a total sample size of 30,000 households and weighted for projection to all US households.
